I'm in my mid-40s, living in upstate New York. I have a Ph.D. in physics and for almost a decade after graduating did research in astrophysics. Now I work as technical writer for software companies where my main interest is in the graphical display of information.
I think of myself primarily as a writer. Technically I actually am a professional writer, that is, people have handed over real cash money (well, checks) for about two-dozen non-fiction pieces on ancient history, and one work of fiction, a long, long time ago.
Since 2006 I have been experimenting with the combination of writing and graphics. (Otherwise known as comics.) I create 3D, computer-generated graphics mainly I think it's fun and when done well they look very neat. I was a staff cartoonist and contributing writer at Renderosity last year, but unfortunately had to drop those.
I bought a new camera so I could take pictures to use in conjunction with the 3D stuff, but I ended up going way beyond that when I has a photoshoot with Julie Simone in November. She was great to work with and very indulgent of my beginner status.
